Split Ring Installation Tool

The purpose of this project was to develop a tool that would install and remove a split ring from a stump. The existing method involved pry bars and hammers, which was not user friendly. A mechanical solution was desired over a hydraulic solution.

The deliverables of this project were

  • Strength of Materials calculations for bending of curved bars. A force-deflection relationship and force-stress relationship was determined.
  • LabVIEW program to find deflection of beam at all locations of split ring, not just at split, and determine what force will deflect the ring enough to remove the ring from the groove. 2 geometric methods completed, then a strength of materials method was completed. The program exports deflection points for import into 3D CAD software.
  • List of issues regarding provided concept.
  • Construction Drawings of detailed design with specified or custom components. This included a solidworks model of the tool. Two configurations were modeled, original ring and deflected ring.
  • FEA of ring to confirm deflection & stress.
  • Stress analysis of components. For example: shear & bending of interface blocks, thread stripping, required input forces, etc.
  • Project managed procurement from distributors and a machine shop.
